What is a Plumbing Return Line?

TYPICAL PLUMBING

In a typical home your main water supply system consists of a cold water line and a hot water line. Just those 2 water lines. Building your system like this causes a situation where your hot water is stationary whenever you’re not using it. Which causes it to cool down over time. Meaning the longer you’re not using your hot water the colder it becomes. This is very inconvenient and causes waste of so much water waiting for it to get hot. And the bigger your house is, the worse it gets!

This is where the return line comes into play! A return line is an additional hot water line that goes from your water heater to the furthest fixture in your house (or business). There is also a recirculation pump that gets installed by your water heater. When this pump is activated it puts your hot water in constant motion. Generally this process significantly reduces the amount of time you wait for hot water.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY / ENERGY EFFICIENT

Installing a recirculation system in your house is one of the best investments you can make. It can save hundreds of gallons of water that’s being wasted as you wait for hot water to be supplied. Meaning you’ll use a lot less water on your shower. Pumps also typically have a timer on them that you can adjust to begin the recirculation process. This is an energy saver. You can set it for specific times you know you want hot water! Saving you money over time.
