VENTING and DRAINAGE materials

International Plumbing Code 702

Copper DWV

  • Hardly utilized today due to cost.

  • Color coded with yellow writing and lines.

Cast Iron

  • Typically used in areas subject to high temperatures. Such as behind an oven.

  • Manufactured from tar coated cast iron.

ABS DWV

  • ABS and PVC are the most commonly used plumbing materials used today.

  • Manufactured from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene.

PVC Schedule 40

  • Most widely used material today.

  • Manufactured from polyvinyl chloride.

Water Piping Materials

Copper Type K, L, M

  • K type copper is the thickest of the 3 and used underground and typically on bigger projects.

  • Type L is the most commonly used. This should be the copper used for water supply.

  • Type M is the thinnest and is very easy. to bend. This is approved for water supply but, we’d recommend only using this for drainage.

PVC Schedule 40

  • Commonly used.

  • Same thickness as galvanized piping.

  • Comes in different pressure ratings.

Galvanized

  • Not used much today.

  • Was used the 1970’s and before.

  • Manufactured from galvanized coated steel.

CPVC

  • Manufactured from Chlorinated Poly-Vinyl Chloride.

  • Creamy Color

PEX

  • Popular choice for small jobs
